International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons (NPT Side Event).

Japan organizes a side event on the "International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons (IGEP)" to present its recommendations for the 2026 NPT Review Conference.

On 27 April 2026, from 13:15 to 14:30 in Conference Room 12 at UN Headquarters, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan will host a side event during the 2026 NPT Review Conference. The event will present activities and recommendations of the International Group of Eminent Persons (IGEP), titled "Stepping Back from the Nuclear Precipice: Urgent Actions in Pursuit of a World Without Nuclear Weapons."

The event is designed as a policy discussion on how its recommendations can be translated into the key issues facing the 2026 NPT Review Conference. Following the opening remarks delivered by high-level Representative of the Government of Japan and a brief overview of the report, panelists will examine which recommendations are most timely, realistic, and actionable in light of the current challenges confronting the NPT regime.

The discussion will focus, in particular, on nuclear risk reduction, crisis prevention, confidence building measures, transparency and accountability, and ways to bridge differing perspectives within the NPT process. It will also explore which recommendations may be most relevant to the 2026 Review Conference and how they could be reflected in its outcome.

Against the backdrop of growing geopolitical tensions and rapid technological change, the IGEP calls for urgent action to reduce nuclear risks, halt arms racing, and build momentum towards a forward-looking outcome at the 2026 Review Conference. The IGEP emphasizes the need to move beyond overreliance on nuclear deterrence, strengthen disarmament commitments, and address emerging challenges, including AI and cyber threats. Its vision is clear: a world in which Nagasaki remains the last city ever to suffer nuclear devastation.
