The  Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)  held from 28 April to 9 May 2025 at the  United Nations Headquarters  in New York. The Preparatory Committee, open to all States parties to the Treaty, is responsible for addressing substantive and procedural issues related to the Treaty and the forthcoming Review Conference. Preventing and Managing Nuclear Crises in the 21st Century (NPT PrepCom Side Event).

On Wednesday, April 30th, the Institute for Security and Technology and the Vienna Center for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament will co-host a panel discussion at the 2024 Preparatory Committee for the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) at the UNHQ. The event will be sponsored by and opened by senior leaders from the governments of Switzerland and Germany and will investigate how states can more readily reduce the risks of and ultimately prevent nuclear crises and conflicts in the 21st century. International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons (NPT PrepCom Side Event).

Japan organizes a side event on the "International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons (IGEP)" to present its recommendations for the 2026 NPT Review Conference. On April 28, 2025, from 13:15 to 14:30 at Conference Room 11, Japan hosts a side event on the " International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons (IGEP) ". The event will present the recommendations of the IGEP, titled " Stepping Back from the Nuclear Precipice: Urgent Actions in Pursuit of a World Without Nuclear Weapons. " Opening remarks will be delivered by Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan , followed by a keynote presentation by Dr. George Perkovich (IGEP member) and a speech by H.E Mr. Harold Agyeman, Chair of the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference. Extra-Regional States and the Middle East WMD-Free Zone.

The UNIDIR and EU hold a side event on the role of extra-regional states in the Middle East WMD-Free Zone on the margins of the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. UNIDIR will present the results of its research, drawing from established nuclear weapon-free zone experiences. The presentation will cover topics such as zone of application, negative security assurances, and maritime, transfer and sharing issues, as well as their relevance to the Middle East . The event will feature opening remarks by EU Special Envoy for Non-proliferation and Disarmament , Ambassador Stephan Klement . Following UNIDIR's presentation, senior diplomats and experts will participate in a panel discussion to reflect on the research findings and provide their perspectives.
